U.S. spot bitcoin funds took in about $440.8 million in four days, and bitcoin still ended near $76,400 late Friday. Binance put a breach at about $6.3 billion. Bitcoin now sits about 1% above Strategy's average cost.

MARKET PULSE

Bitcoin spent the first half of the week testing $80,000. It spent the second half falling through it.

It traded near $80,200 early Monday after a dip to about $79,800. It reached about $81,400 Wednesday morning, with ether near $2,370. By late Friday bitcoin traded near $76,400 and ether near $2,230. Bitcoin is down more than 8% for October.

Three things changed under the price. Fund buyers came back, but the coin fell below what they paid. Tech selling hit bitcoin even as bond yields fell. Then the largest exchange reported the largest theft on record.

Here are the six forces that drove crypto this week.

Man Who Tabbed AMD at $2 a Share Just Made His Biggest Call Yet

On March 6, 2009, Matt McCall went on FOX Business and gave away nine stocks. One was AMD, trading around two dollars. It has since soared as much as 25,000%.

Now he's giving away the name and ticker behind his next big call.

THEME 1

The Largest Theft Hit the Largest Exchange

Binance put the damage from a breach at about $6.3 billion, with about $3 billion frozen on-chain. That is more than four times Bybit's $1.5 billion theft in 2025. Withdrawals stayed paused Friday.

Binance says it already holds $5 billion of the exact tokens taken. It reserved over $6.34 billion and is buying the rest. It aims to reopen withdrawals by Sunday and publish full proof of reserves by Monday.

The freeze worked only on coins with an issuer. Tether froze more than $1.5 billion of USDT and Circle more than $800 million of USDC. TRM Labs says the attacker still holds more than 420,000 ether and 18,270 bitcoin.

The damage spread. Aave froze lending on hundreds of markets after an attacker-linked wallet borrowed against USDT. Aave says its contracts weren't hit, and it reopened the markets Friday.

A Promise Outsiders Can't Check Yet

Binance turned a solvency scare into a test of its own balance sheet. Stablecoin issuers stopped what they could. The coins they could not stop are bitcoin and ether, and a large stack of each now sits with the attacker.

THEME 2

Funds Bought. The Coin Fell Below Their Cost.

U.S. spot bitcoin funds took in about $440.8 million from Monday through Thursday, Farside data show. Each day was positive: $110 million, $176 million, $137 million and $17 million. On Monday, all of it went into BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT).

Bitcoin fell anyway. Coinbase's research puts ETF buyers' average cost near $81,300. By Thursday morning, bitcoin sat below it. By late Friday it was about 6% below that level.

Ether funds lost about $275.7 million over the same four days. Thursday's $105 million was the largest daily outflow.

Buyers Under Water

The inflows faded to $17 million by Thursday and did not lift the price. Every new dollar now sits on a loss. Ether had no fund bid at all, so its slide came with steady selling behind it.

THEME 3

Bitcoin Traded With Tech, Not Bonds

The Fed held at 3.75% to 4.00% in a 10-2 vote. Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack wanted a hike. Chair Kevin Warsh made no December commitment. Kalshi's hike contract last traded at 3 cents before it closed.

Rates then eased. The 10-year yield fell to near 4.93% Friday, a seven-week low. Kalshi's December hike contract slid from 77 cents to 71 Thursday, mostly after the close.

Bitcoin did not follow bonds. Its first leg down came in the hour Amazon (AMZN) and Intel (INTC) reported Thursday, before Binance said anything. Intel's drop deepened to about 31% in regular trading Friday, and the Nasdaq fell about 3.4%.

Bitcoin fell as low as about $76,300. About $1.5 billion of leveraged bets were liquidated over 24 hours. About $11 billion of bitcoin options expired Friday.

Safety Went Elsewhere

Falling yields usually help an asset that pays no interest. This week they did not. Gold fell about 3.5% Friday to near $3,890, so the haven trade skipped both. Bitcoin and gold were already 2026's two worst major assets through Oct. 23.

THEME 4

Treasury Companies Turned Toward Their Holders

Strategy bought no bitcoin last week and bought back its preferred instead. It spent $204.9 million on STRC preferred. Strategy (MSTR) also sold 5,552 bitcoin last quarter to fund preferred dividends and buybacks. Its bitcoin per share is down 3.7% this year, and its finance chief is leaving.

Shareholders approved daily dividends on its preferred. STRC goes first, with a Nov. 1 record date.

Strive (ASST) was the active buyer, adding 6,182 bitcoin in the same week. It set up a program to sell up to $1 billion of 15% preferred. SkyAI sold all its Solana, about 2 million SOL. SkyAI (SKYA) is handing holders about $214.3 million in a tender.

Datavault AI (DVLT) says it hasn't been able to withdraw about 1,328 bitcoin from Biconomy since June. Its shares fell 49.6% Tuesday.

The Cushion Got Thin

The biggest holder is paying its own investors before it buys coins. Bitcoin sits about 1% above Strategy's $75,446 average cost. One more bad day would put the largest corporate stack under water.

Crypto Stocks Fell Several Times as Far

Friday's selling hit the businesses harder than the coin. Coinbase (COIN) fell about 13% after touching a 52-week low. Circle (CRCL) lost about 10%, Robinhood (HOOD) almost 10% and Bullish (BLSH) about 15%. Bitcoin slipped about 2%.

Circle was already weak. It fell 7% Monday after Mizuho argued AI assistants could steer savers away from USDC.

The earnings set it up. Robinhood now earns more from prediction markets than from crypto. Crypto revenue fell 55% to $120 million, while event contracts brought in $173 million.

Coinbase's revenue held flat from the second quarter at $1.22 billion, down 35% from a year earlier. Most of its $719 million profit came from gains on crypto it holds. A filing shows Brian Armstrong and two insiders plan to sell up to 13.6 million shares.

Priced as Leveraged Tech

Trading revenue is shrinking, and coin gains carried the profits. That leaves these stocks tied to tech's mood and to the coin's price at once. Friday showed both pulling the same way.

Regulated Rails Kept Arriving

Ripple says its trust bank won final OCC approval. The charter covers the reserves behind its RLUSD stablecoin. Within days, BNY (BNY) added custody, and Coinbase listed RLUSD. Moody's gave RLUSD's reserves an A2 rating, and Ripple says RLUSD tops $2.6 billion.

Intercontinental Exchange agreed to run a regulated U.S. retail market for perpetual futures. The contracts run on Hyperliquid. ICE (ICE) gained about 4.5%, and Hyperliquid Strategies (PURR) about 23%. Regulators still have to approve it.

The Depository Trust Company launched its tokenization service Wednesday. It runs on permissioned chains, and DTC keeps the official books. Bessent says agencies can build crypto rules without Congress, though nothing has been proposed.

Built for Institutions, Waiting on Them

Banks, exchanges and clearinghouses all moved closer to crypto this week. None of it lifted the coin. The rails are being laid on Wall Street's terms while trading volumes shrink.

Rates Just Reset. Who Feels It First?
